Early Life and Family Background

Laura Jurkowski was born in Connecticut to two talented artists and fine art conservators who taught her the fundamentals of art from a young age. Her mother was a dedicated artist and fine art conservator who learned restoration techniques from Jurkowski's father. Immersed in a household filled with painting, restoration, and artistic expression, Jurkowski learned hands-on techniques and appreciation for the craft directly from both parents, though she pursued no formal training in school or college and considers herself largely self-taught in her development as a painter. One early memory involves her father handing her a Q-tip at around age four to participate in working on a 200-year-old canvas. Her father, Robert Jurkowski, was a multi-talented American artist renowned for his landscape paintings, particularly those depicting the vast beauty of Wyoming's Big Horn Country. Living near Lovell, Wyoming, in the late 1990s, he created panoramic works such as "Painted Near Kane, Wyoming" (circa 1998) and "On a Journey" (2000), reflecting his deep connection to the region's rugged vistas and natural heritage. He was also skilled in fine art conservation.

Following her parents' separation around age eight, Jurkowski lived primarily with her mother in Connecticut, continuing to absorb conservation techniques and artistic principles under her mother's direct influence. In her late teens, she faced significant loss with the passing of her mother to cancer at age seventeen. She then relocated to Wyoming to join her father, finding moments of peace amid the landscapes that inspired his paintings. Tragically, her father passed away from cancer shortly thereafter.

These early experiences, steeped in family-taught creativity from both her mother and father, profound challenges, and the enduring "MoonDoggy" nickname from childhood, profoundly shaped Jurkowski's resilience and path. She continues to honor her parents' legacy by using their old brushes in her work and occasionally sharing resurfaced pieces from her father's collection.

Early Career and Professional Path

Before fully committing to art as her primary profession, Jurkowski held several short-term roles that provided practical experience and stability during her rebuilding years. These included working as a dental assistant, serving as an EMT, and later holding a retail job. Though these positions offered valuable lessons in caregiving, precision, high-pressure decision-making, and customer interaction, they ultimately did not fulfill her deeper calling.

Driven by an intense desire to paint and create full-time, Jurkowski made a bold decision: she walked out of her retail job to take a significant risk on her art. This leap of faith marked the turning point where she bet on herself, channeling all her energy into honing her self-taught skills and building a sustainable artistic career. She officially launched MoonDoggy LLC as a full-time venture on March 1, 2024.

Entry into Professional Art and Founding MoonDoggy LLC

After navigating early adulthood and rebuilding her life, eventually spending time in Florida and returning to Connecticut, Jurkowski channeled her self-taught skills into a full-time career. She overcame initial hesitations, such as intimidation around portrait work, to focus on original creations and commissions. MoonDoggy LLC emerged as her independent business, allowing her to operate as her own boss while producing canvas paintings, skate deck art, prints, and merchandise. The brand name, rooted in her childhood, serves as a personal tribute to her family's artistic influence and a symbol of continuity.

Key Works, Themes, and Style

Jurkowski's diverse portfolio includes emotionally resonant pet portraits that bring out animals' personalities, majestic wildlife scenes (such as lone wolves like "Night Watcher," snow leopards, and bald eagles), nautical and seascape works, patriotic and fantasy pieces, and bold space-themed art celebrating exploration, innovation, and optimistic futures. Her style blends traditional fine art techniques with contemporary subjects, emphasizing vibrant colors, precise detail, and narrative depth. She draws inspiration from SpaceX and Elon Musk's broader vision, often infusing pieces with themes of perseverance, gratitude, and embracing individuality.

Notable milestones in her career include her first high-profile commission from Adrian Dittmann, a friend of Elon Musk known for his vocal resemblance to him. Additional highlights include a tribute painting donated to the World of Engineering community, a gifted anamorphic cats-playing-poker artwork to the prominent X account @catturd2, and in 2025, a portrait tribute donated following the assassination of Charlie Kirk. This piece was featured at the Turning Point USA (TPUSA) Winter Gala at Mar-a-Lago, recognized by TPUSA, displayed during the event, and placed permanently at their headquarters. The occasion drew attention from figures including Elon Musk's mother, who shared and expressed pride in Jurkowski's post about the event.

Personal Influence, Advocacy, and Community

Jurkowski frequently reflects on her journey through social media, sharing thoughts on turning passion into livelihood, overcoming fears, maintaining independence, and the importance of not dimming one's light amid life's ups and downs. She expresses profound gratitude for her community, including supporters who commission work, engage with her process videos, and provide encouragement, all of which have fueled her growth. By publicly honoring her parents' legacy and evolving the family-taught skills from both her mother and father into her own voice, she bridges traditional roots with modern expression.

Jurkowski aspires to create a mural for SpaceX or a related Elon Musk initiative, viewing it as a dream project that would align her artistic vision with themes of exploration and innovation.

MoonDoggy Studio

The name MoonDoggy has been with me since childhood. When I was little, my favorite book was Goodnight Moon. On one of the pages, there’s a picture of a cow jumping over the moon. But in my young imagination, I was certain it wasn’t a cow, it was a dog. I proudly called it the “Moondoggy.” My parents would gently correct me, laughing, saying, “No, Laura, it’s a cow jumping over the moon.” But I refused to let it go. To me, it was always the MoonDoggy.

When I lost them both to cancer, the name MoonDoggy became a piece of that love I could hold onto.

So when it came time to name my art studio, there was never really a question. MoonDoggy is a tribute to them, and to the imagination they instilled in me. I still paint with my parent's old brushes, which makes me feel closer to them with every painting.

Every piece I create under the name MoonDoggy carries a bit of that story: keeping the imagination alive.
